SMV Rules
The official handbook governing participation within San Monte Vista.
Community Rules
SMV(San Monte Vista) follows the Linden Lab Terms of Service and Community Standards. By entering the region you understand the rules set forth and detailed below, see also IC/OOC rules, animal rules, vehicle rules, combat rules and rental rules. Any breach of the Linden Lab TOS is a breach of sim rules. Although sim rules are set in place they are subject to change and will be announced accordingly. Thoroughly read the rules set forth, ignorance of the rules is no excuse to break them.
We are an 18+ RP community, all players and characters must be 18 or older to enter the sim. No child avatars or NPCs under the age of 18 are permitted. If your avatar is deemed to have an immature or otherwise under-aged appearance you will be asked to change your avatar’s appearance. No characters in high school are permitted (even if they are 18). Adult human avatars or realistic animal avatars only.
No giants or those with unrealistic proportions, such as huge chests not realistically able to be physically carried by a person’s spine, your avatar must be a realistic size. Height requirements are in place here, we are a realistically proportioned roleplay region, no avatar entering the sim will exceed 7 feet tall (213.36 cm).
Only avatars over 2 weeks old (14 days) will be permitted to enter. Contact staff should you wish for an alt name of yours to enter and it is under 2 weeks old.
Do not go AFK or camp in public spaces for prolonged periods of time, you will be ejected or teleported home if unresponsive in a public space for over 15 minutes past contact. It is OK to go AFK/OOC if you’re in your own residential rental, you may also go AFK in the OOC welcome area. Wear your OOC group tag if you are OOC.
No begging for lindens from other players, from groups or in local chat. No monetary (linden) exchange is permitted between players for any services with the exception of tip jars for DJs for sim events.
Trolls and griefers are not welcome. No griefing of any kind (HUDs/magic tools), use of chat spies, trolling, poaching, phishing, spamming groups, flying, hyper jumping, or any behavior intended to disrupt our players.
Do not quarrel, belittle or disrespect our hard working staff. Respect is key.
Any group, group title, or role using the San Monte Vista or SMV name, or otherwise presenting itself as an official organization or affiliation, must be approved by staff.
No hover text of any kind is permitted on objects. Single line titlers above an avatar’s head are OK. Hover text may only be used for tip jars for DJs.
No breedables/farming, no prim babies such as zooby etc.
Shouting objects, gestures, talking tummies, combat HUDs, pets or vehicles that spam to local chat are not permitted.
Avoid unnecessary scripted attachments. No bling, no face lights unless briefly used for photography. No excessive particles. No shoulder pets or following pets that are unrealistic. Admins may ask you to remove these attachments.
Public nudity, sex, rape, violence, can and will happen in an adult role play setting. Update your limits accordingly on your picks and avoid situations where your limits may be tested.
Admins are present to help you with any conflict that may come up between players in the course of role play. Players first should try to work out the issue prior to calling an admin, if no compromise can be found simply request assistance in the OOC Group or message a staff member directly. Be aware that if no conclusion can be reached then the scene may get voided or faded to black.
RP Rules
No metagaming, powergaming or godmodding is allowed.
Local chat is always IC (in character), if you’re in a public space you are considered IC. IMs should be a place for OOC (out of character) chat, text messages or calls. If you need to say something briefly OOCly, do it in ((brackets like this)), a lot of OOC chat in local should be moved to a conference or IMs.
No role play will be considered private if it is in a public space. A private space would be a private home, or a motel/hotel room.
The Republic has banned the use of social media and blocked access to platforms such as Bluesky, Facebook, X, and similar services while on the Isla. You are welcome to use these platforms OOCly for advertising, picture sharing, and other out-of-character purposes; however, ICly, we ask that all roleplay remain centralized through in-world means or our official Discord.
Roleplay at SMV is all consent based, it never hurts to ask your fellow player if they would be OK with an action done to their character. Use “attempt” words in your roleplay to give other players a chance to respond according to their character.
Please give other players at least two sentences of role play per post and use /me in local chat to signify actions and “quotes” to represent your character’s spoken words.
Utilize post order when in local chat. This means you must take turns with your fellow players. Please allow one full round of post order before entering into an ongoing scene. During social events players may have smaller circles in their own post order, as it would be in real life. The post order for large social events, or group roleplays over 5 characters is usually casual unless it is combat rp, discuss with your fellow players.
Posting in: allow other players to post in (enter a scene) with their own characters prior to seeing them arrive in your post. If you are unsure, message your fellow player to see if they are posting in.
If your avatar is in public, consider them always IC. Wear an OOC tag if you are OOC and not able to be engaged with ICly.
All sim businesses and municipal services are open for role play at any time. Feel free to NPC clerks in a store or hospital reception, for example, if no players are available to fill the role. Likewise, unless expressly stated by a business lead, no business should be assumed closed or without basic staff unless there is a closed sign on the building.
NPC usage should be very limited, do not play more than 2 NPCs at any given time, NPC use should be non-confrontational and only used as “extras”.
Before role playing damage to a business, vehicle or home that would be noticeable or impact operations (fire, vehicle theft, break-ins, major theft, jail breaks, vandalism (graffiti/posters) for example), coordinate with the business lead, residential renter and a sim admin to receive Out of Character permission.
No weapons of mass destruction, no explosives such as bombs, chemical (other than pepper spray and smoke bombs), gas or biological warfare methods may be considered for roleplay without staff approval first.
Private, residential rentals cannot be broken into or entered without OOC consent from the renter.
Planned and scheduled events should never be disrupted by major RPs such as shootings, fires, major calamities etc without the approval of an admin in advance. The admin will reach out to the person(s) hosting the event and ask for consent.
In order to post lures/calls in the IC group your avatar must be actually on sim and on the scene.
Multiple characters by a single player are welcome, however only a limit of three characters are permitted per player. Example: 2 alts, 1 main. When you are found to have more than the approved amount of characters you will be asked to choose until you are at limit.
Only municipal workers may answer emergency calls (dispatch). There are no police services here, only militia, fire/emt and hospital services.
Due to the authoritative nature of these characters please gain staff approval prior to roleplaying any character on a federal/govt level, this includes but is not limited to characters who are FBI, DEA, CIA, ATF, and Diplomats. If allowed, bear in mind you may be asked for your top level character to be played on a short term basis only for limited storylines.
Bulletproof vests/kevlar, and all weapons must be mentioned being on the person in role play prior to use in a scene. Kevlar and weapons must also all be visible on the character.
Recording devices/cameras are limited to use on one’s person or one’s own property so they can be roleplayed appropriately. There must be a physical item to represent the camera and be mentioned on a sign or in emotes prior to use. Cameras must be standard size cams or dome types. No spycams, drones or hidden mics are allowed.
Tech usage: technology will be allowed (such as tracking devices) however the tech must be modern (not future tech), no bionic parts that are super human or provide a supernatural advantage. If your character has a tracker it should be mentioned in the scene by emotes or be able to be detected prior to its use. Bear in mind even modern tech has faults, and can be removed or prevented from use.
Refrain from insulting another player’s character or person through thought emotes unless your character actually says something about their thoughts or expresses these thoughts in some way that can be detected IC (such as a look of disgust etc).
Under no circumstance will we tolerate role play revolving around racism or hate crimes of any kind in any way. We will not tolerate hate speech or symbols of hate, racism or intolerance.
We do allow cross-sim roleplay!
Rental Rules
1 residential, 1 commercial, 1 sim lead prim (free of charge) are allowed per player unless otherwise allowed by an owner.
No reservations for residential rentals, refunds given only at owner discretion.
For all rentals except hotel rooms, there is a 48 hour grace (overdue) period. Please be aware that after 48 hours have passed you will be evicted with your items returned. Hotel rooms are week to week rentals only and evict immediately.
SMV staff are not responsible for any items lost as a result of a return of prims. To avoid this unfortunate event, remain at your land impact limit and please stay up to date on your rent. Remember to select “Will Not Renew” and clear your rental if you’re not planning on continuing to rent.
Always keep an eye on your land impact limit and stay within those bounds. You may help to decorate another person’s place with their consent but keep in mind you must stay within your own allowance.
Transfers are permitted for in-character circumstances but you should make sure you’re renting the unit you actually want prior to doing so. Please be aware that your request for transfer to another unit may be declined.
Both in-home and storefront (commercial) businesses must be applied for and approved prior to being utilized and rented as a business.
Co-tenants are permitted if you’re sharing a home. Make sure you add them to the unit’s rental box as tenants. No more than 1 co-tenant per unit due to SL script limits. There are no co-tenants allowed for businesses either player business (if run out of an empty store front) or lead business.
You are permitted to decorate the rentals adhering spaces such as the yard, facade, balcony or similar space, within our theme.
No obtrusive objects in front of or around your rental or on/in anyone else’s. Keep in the visual theme of the sim. No megaprims, privacy screens, lights with huge radius, hover text, particle poofers, full bright on items that aren’t lights or large landscaping objects. If an item is deemed obtrusive or an eye sore it may be returned without warning. When in doubt, never hesitate to ask a staff member.
Limit your scripts on sim, recolor and resize scripts can and should be removed from static items that have copy permissions.
Subletting is not permitted, you may not rent a property for the purpose of renting it out to another player, all rental units belong to the sim.
Pets and animals are permitted, however please stay within your own land impact limit and do not rez more than 2. Take scripted animals back into your inventory when not in use or logging off. Bear in mind if you leave them out they may be returned to your inventory without warning.
Combat Rules
SMV respects your right to have the sort of roleplay you want to have. You may elect to be a non-combative and request a non-combat RP tag. This is recommended for unarmed characters and those who don’t want to rp combat. However, there are some caveats:
Non-combat may not initiate combat scenes and must exit a scene, or stay completely out of the way of danger should combat begin around them. Non-combatants may not stay and abuse their non-combat role to aggravate a combatant.
Non combat roles must be set prior to starting any RP scene.
Non combat role players may not change their role to combat in the same scene, nor leave and enter the same scene as a combatant.
Non combat roleplayers may not use their role to avoid consequences.
Establish motive and set the scene by allowing 2 rounds of regular roleplay before starting combat.
Upon entering a combat scene allow 1 round of posts from all participants prior to joining, even if you are not planning on engaging in combat.
If you are using a weapon for any combat scene it must contain 2 posts. Post 1 is pulling the weapon out and aiming, Post 2 is utilizing the weapon (pulling the trigger, launching a projectile).
During combat you are allowed 2 actions-either attack or defense. For example, all attack: pulling the trigger twice. 1 attack and 1 defense: shooting once and ducking out of the way. 2 defense, blocks hit and attempts to flee. If you choose to use two attacks (such as pulling a trigger twice in one post) and are using dice, ensure you roll twice, once for each action. The combat partner may then roll for defense to see if it is successful prior to posting and must establish if the roll is for attack or defense.
Play fair, remember no character is invincible and be a good sport! RP turn based combat is required. No combat huds are permitted here unless distributed by the sim staff, you may use optional 25 sided dice provided at the main rez terminal to determine outcomes at random. Dice usage chart:
25-direct hit, unable to be defended against.
24-20-strong hit, able to defend.
19-10-medium hit, able to defend.
10-0: weak hit or miss, able to defend.
Calling for help: In order to call or message anyone for help you must emote the request in roleplay so other players can respond accordingly. One call for help counts as one of your actions.
No one may force you to kill your character or force you to go outside of your limits, however please keep your avatar’s behavior realistic. Do not push your own limits in turn. Fair play and collaborative writing is expected.
NPCs may be used in combat, however they only are able to use 1 move and that move takes up 1 action or defense move of whichever player is writing them during combat.
All weapons which are to be considered in roleplay ‘on person’ must be visible on the actual avatar, this includes concealed weapons as well.
All realistic modern day available firearms can be used, bought, sold and traded at SMV.
Vehicle Rules
Smaller vehicles are permitted for use by all renters at SMV. Citizens would be more likely to ride bicycles, golf carts, mopeds, motorcycles or use public transit via tuk tuk, for a list of recommended small vehicles see here.
Standard sized vehicles will only be permitted by those holding limited vehicle permits, the reason for this being that the isla has a limited supply of gasoline, it doesn’t have the types of roads that would be realistic to have standard sized vehicle traffic on. Large armored or oversized vehicles are not permitted.
No flying vehicles (such as helicopters, small aircraft) unless approved by sim staff prior to the scene.
Do not leave vehicles rezzed when not in use, any vehicle left out will be subject to item return due to land script usage.
Animal Rules
No human animal hybrids, no furries, no fantasy creatures, or any other non realistic animal avatars are allowed. No horses, the isla cannot maintain them realistically.
No bestiality (sexual activity between humans/animals), or sexual activity between animals.
No flying animals are allowed without admin or owner permission due to flying permissions.
The following animal avatars are permitted: dogs, cats, rats, mice, raccoons, lizards, sharks, dolphins, chickens.
Unlike human avatars that have two actions per round if engaged in combat, animal characters have only one action per round.
No competitive animal fighting is permitted such as dogfights/cockfights. But animals may fight each other naturally or against a human.
Diseases such as rabies are uncommon at SMV and technically exterminated, however animal avatars may be roped into vaccine drives.
Please keep in mind that if you play an animal avatar you must be 100% realistic, this means you may not talk as a human, hold a job (unless a service animal) or do anything but emote being an animal.
